Travis was referred to Works Better by a recruitment agency that was struggling to help him secure work. He had very low confidence issues in himself after being out of work for 12 months and this was becoming a barrier for him.
The team put together an action plan for Travis. He needed to build his confidence back up and develop a CV and start applying for roles.
Because Travis has Dyslexia, he saw this as a massive barrier when it came to developing a CV and writing applications. So the team worked with him to tackle this and feel more at ease with the process. It was then he saw a job in a local brewery that caught his interest.
It wasn’t long before a Works Better Job Connector matched Travis to the vacancy at Elland Brewery Craft and Tap Bar.
The team carried out some mock interview support to get Travis ready and feel less anxious about the interview process. Shortly afterwards he was successful at interview!
With the support of his new colleagues and getting used to engaging with customers at the bar has helped Travis to develop more confidence and feel more positive.
“My friends and family have said they have noticed a change in me and I can also see a change in myself,” he said.
As the role has developed Travis has started working partly in the brewery, he requested to be able to keep his hours at the bar because he was enjoying working with the customers.
He is now planning to move out of his Dad’s house and rent a place with some friends. Travis is enjoying his current job, and it has lots of room for development so he’s hoping to stay there long-term.
His customer service and interpersonal skills have developed along with his overall confidence & wellbeing.
Before joining the programme, Travis was looking for work labouring on train lines and would have never considered the type of customer-facing work he is now doing.
The support he got from the team on the programme made him want to look at jobs that he wouldn’t have normally considered. Now he is in a job he enjoys that he wouldn’t have considered before.
