Mahomis has spent most of her adult life studying to be a Biochemist and she had a degree and the appropriate qualifications to start work straight away. The only barriers to employment were 1) improving her English, 2) finding suitable work locally that matched her skills-set and 3) creating a CV to complement her job applications.
Initially the team referred Mahomis to the Hillside Community hub to look at beginning her English lessons. After attending a few of these sessions she felt more comfortable attending ‘inspire’ training sessions at Fusion Housing and one-to-one sessions with her Transitional Support Worker Kim. Here she focussed on confidence building, job searching and interview preparation with recruitment support officers.
Mahomis high level qualifications meant looking on specialist job sites and LinkedIn (a social media site) to get noticed by employers for her skills and experience and support her when applying for roles.
It didn’t take long before Mahomis was successful in securing a 6-month full time contract working in the laboratories at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
She has almost finished her 6-month contract and has an interview for another permanent post at the hospital where she will be meeting with Kim to go through some interview skills!
When we asked Mahomis how she found her time on Works Better said: “I had only been living in the UK for a short while when I was referred to Works Better by my husband. It was there I met my Transitional Support Worker, Kim who has guided and supported me really well.’’
