Unique support helped Zara return to nursing

Unique support helped Zara return to nursing after 16 years

When Zara left 6th form she went straight to university and trained as a nurse. However after her training she became pregnant and then a full time mum so despite being a qualified nurse she has had no experience of working within nursing other that her placements whilst at University. She hasn’t been in work for 16 years to look after her children.

Zara met her Transitional Support Worker, Lorraine, at an adult training event and discussed her background and desire to get back into employment. She was encouraged by her Transitional Support Worker to look at returning to nursing training.

The idea of this made her very nervous as she had not retained her nursing registration. In a one to one session they both looked into her options of retraining and getting into nursing. Just this support to that already made Zara look forward to the idea of getting into her desired career!

The team helped Zara to complete an application form and look at other training opportunities that would help her. They looked at IT training, Maths, Employability skills workshops, interview skills and volunteering opportunities to help her gain an employer reference.

Through this Zara managed to secure an interview with Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS and with Bradford University and was accepted onto the 'Return to Nursing' training. She has now started her course at Bradford University and is looking forward to starting her return to nursing!

Zara will keep in touch with our team to let us know how she is getting on – the best of luck!
