At Works Better we work with a lot of people across Kirklees Calderdale and Wakefield. Our staff that work with candidate’s have noticed that one of the biggest barriers so far that’s stopping people getting to interview stages is the lack of up to date educational information on their CV.
If you look on any job site you can see a reoccurring notice on many job descriptions -
For example - Must have literacy and numeracy skills e.g. GCSE Level C or equivalent
Some positions do require applicants to have a certain level of education. Employers will list the requirements for qualifications in the job description. In some cases equivalent experience, can be substituted for some or all of the educational requirements.
But what do you do though, if you don’t have all the educational requirements for a job?
If your educational background isn’t a close match but you have employment, volunteer, internship, or learning experiences that would support your application, it’s worth taking the time to apply. But you may not be shortlisted if the qualifications are essential to the employer.
What are the benefits to doing additional courses?
If you lack the qualifications needed for roles or it’s been years since you last acheived a qualification and you feel your skills are outdated and this is becoming a barrier to work, then ensuring you have those skills can be beneficial to your application and everyday life as well.
Ensuring your Maths and English and Digital skills are up to date can help you to;
· Help improve everyday life skills
· Support in managing your personal finances / budgeting
· Help for future job applications and interviews
· Work smarter with new technology and stay current
· Give you the up to date knowledge to be able to support your children with homework
To find out about the English and Maths courses available you can find more information at your local adult education centre.
If you are struggling to get past the application stage in your job search a member of our team would be happy to see if we can support you getting further.
